The Golden Rules in Pet Training
- Don’t punish your pet for something you didn’t see him do (even if you’re sure that he did it)
- Positive reinforcement goes a long way
Potty training for dogs
Starting inside. One method of potty training is by using paper or pretreated pads, which are scented to encourage the puppy to use them. When you sense that your puppy needs to go to the bathroom, pick him up and bring him to the paper/pad, which is located in your house. If he urinates there, praise him. Once he uses the papers/pads consistently, you can move them outside so that your puppy urinates there instead.
The only problem with this method is that your puppy starts inside your home, which can be hassle. This method of dog training may also take longer than other methods.
Crate training. This method involves leaving your dog in a crate or cage that is big enough to be his bed. It is pretty effective since dogs wouldn’t want to lie in spoiled beds. Make sure that the cage is just the right size for him to lie in. If not, he can easily relieve himself in a corner far from where he sleeps without worry of sleeping in his own mess.
Since it’s hard to control urination and defecation, make sure that you take your dog outside every few hours just in case he needs to relieve himself. This method does not only teach your puppy to use the outdoors but also teaches him that he can hold his urges. This is very important in the future, considering the fact that they make fewer mistakes than dogs trained using other dog training methods.
Constant supervision. This method is for owners who are at home 24/7. Whenever you sense that your puppy needs to go to the bathroom, hustle him outside. After he does his business, praise him and immediately bring him back inside. Make sure that he knows what his trip outside means.
Verbal cues. It is always better that you and your puppy have an understanding of what you want from him. Use certain words to associate with what you want him to do. For example, use the word “outside” if you want him to go outside and “potty” to do his business. Once he does this, praise him again and immediately bring him back inside so he knows what his trip means.
Accidents. When an accident happens and you didn’t see it, don’t scold your dog, as he will have no idea what he did to deserve it. If, by any chance, you do see him doing his dirty deeds, scold him slightly and bring him outside to finish what he’s doing. When he finishes, praise him.
Dog Feeding and housetraining
Puppies will need to use the bathroom a little while after they wake or eat. You should therefore have a definite and consistent feeding schedule for your pet. This would make it easier for you to determine when he needs to go to the bathroom and you can plan what time you bring him outside.
For those who don’t have any idea how to start the dog training, you may consider visiting veterinary clinics or pet boarding kennels for training tips and ideas.
All in all, if you want to potty train your pet in the least amount of time possible, the best way is to spend a lot of time with him. Be patient, stay calm, and you will see positive results of your dog training in no time.
